Alicia Gurney has been coming to Highway 54 Pilates for three years. She originally came into the studio because she needed to get back into shape after a double mastectomy and chemotherapy due to breast cancer. With Amie’s encouragement she showed Alicia that with Pilates it was possible to get her strength and self-confidence back. Alicia has said that Pilates and Amie made it possible for her to get up out of her chair and enjoy life. She has participated in private and group classes in Pilates and continues to inspire us with her progress! Here are her answers to our questions.
When did you start working out at Highway 54 Pilates and why?
I started in may of 2017 about 15 months after my last chemo treatment. I had no muscle definition and did not have energy to do much but sit in my chair.
Describe your workouts. How many days a week do you workout?
I work out 2 days a week.
What is your current fitness goal?
To keep getting stronger so that i can have the energy to get out of my chair!!
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
To be able to go up and down the stairs and vacuum.
What helps you stay on track?
The way if feel after class and going to class right from work.
What do you do when you’re not at the studio?
Work at Spirit Aerosystyems and i love to work in the yard if it is not too hot. I can always read anywhere anytime.
Do you have a favorite exercise or favorite piece of equipment?
Her favorite piece of equipment is the Reformer. She loves the foot work and specifically with the Jump Board and Wobble Board on the Reformer. She was scheduled for a total foot reconstruction surgery and was able to cancel the surgery and her feet now feel amazing!

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting Pilates?
“Go for it”, it will be the best thing that you can do for yourself!
